由after(在…之后)和math组成。math来源于古英语mǣþ(割草,收割;草料,作物),它与德语Mahd(割草)同源,动词形式是mǣwan[(即现代英语mow(割草)]。所以aftermath指“第一次收割之后长出的新草”、“事件(尤其是灾难或激烈事件)之后留下的后果或余波”。
例:In the aftermath of the hurricane, many people's homes were destroyed. 飓风的后果是许多人的房屋被毁。
